Nations Cup 1999 Opening Ceremonies

Several dignitaries were introduced and lined up at center floor, Head Convener Kevin L Martin, his assistants Jack Hill and Cap Bomberry, The beautiful Miss Teen Six Nations Andrea Hill, Miss Six Nations Courtney Thomas, both resplendent in native garb, Federation Chief Peter Skye, Harvey Longboat, lacrosse legends Ross Powless and Gaylord Powless, Representitives of participating teams, and members of the Six Nations midget championship team carrying the placards that identified the tournament's teams. I'll apologize now for the people I missed, they were introduced faster than these old hands will write.

Topurnament Chair and Coordinator Rusty Doxtdator took the microphone and explained to us that the theme of the ceremonies was "the past, the present, and the future", the past represented by Ross and Gaylord Powless, the present by the tournament participants, and the future by the midget champs carrying the placards, and the young miss pair in the center. Next to speak was Federation Chief Peter Skye, who presented his oratory in the Mohawk language, and was later translated by Harvey Longboat. Pictures were taken, hands were shaken, and everyone was pleased with the presentation, and.....on to the games!!!!!

Nations Cup 1999 Game One Report

Ohsweken Warriors 23, Newtown Golden Eagles 6 September 16, 1999

OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO -- The Ohsweken Warriors whomped the short staffed Newtown Golden Eagles 23-6 this evening in the opening game of the eight team Nations Cup tournament. The Newtown players consisted of one goalie and six runners. The Golden Eagles never quit, but the full bench of the Warriors simply wore out their overworked opposition.

Newtown was able to keep it close for most of the first period, trailing 5-2 with 4:55 left, but the short bench effect took hold and Ohsweken led 8-2 at the end of the first. Warriors' Dave Johnson was awarded a penalty shot when a Newtown player handled the ball with his hand in the crease, but was stopped cold by Clint Jones in the Eagles' net. No penalties were called.

Ohsweken ran the score up to 15-4 in the second frame, one goal being scored shorthanded. Each team took two minors.

Ohsweken's first score of the third was on the power play, as they put the game way out of reach with the final score of 23-6. Each team took one minor.

A disappointing start to the tournament, but I'm sure Newtown will do better when the rest of the team arrives.
Newtown Player of the game: Mike Stevens
Ohsweken Player of the game: Yul Baker
Referees Tim Vinson and Terry Morneau called an excellent game.

Nations Cup 1999 Game Two Report

Frog Pond Maulers 21, Tonawanda Braves 3 September 16,1999

OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO -- The Frog Pond Maulers of Ohsweken demolished the Tonawanda Braves 21-3 tonight in game 2 of the Nations Cup. Three of the Maulers goals came on the power play, four were shorthanded.

The Braves kept it close for the first period, tied at two in midframe, 5-2 for the Maulers at the close. The Braves took 5 of 8 minors.

The second period belonged to the lily-pad hoppers as they scored seven unanswered goals to increase their lead to 12-2. Each team took five minors.

The Maulers added a string of five goals spread over thirteen minutes, before the Braves got their final point, and put four more on the board to make the final 21-3. The Maulers took four of seven minors.
Tonawanda Player of the game: Tony Henderson
Frog Pond Player of the game: Tyler Bomberry, hard working defensive play.

Kim Squire note 1: Kimbo kept his cool tonight, despite some scuffling in his vicinity. Well done, Kim!!

Kim Squire note 2: Lighter bracing on Kimbo's knee, and a barely perceptable, occasional limp point to "that pesky joint" beginning to mend.
Referees Don McGrath and Gary Martin called an excellent game.

Nations Cup Game Three Report and Summary

OHSWEKEN -- The Mohawk Nations Thunderbirds routed the Onondaga Warriors 18-7 this morning in the third game of the Nations Cup round robin. The Thunderbirds kept up a relentless attack that soon wore down the short-benched Warriors.

Onondaga jumped out to a 2-0 lead that lasted to midframe when Kariwate Mitchell took a holding munor for the 'Birds. Before his penalty was over, his mates had notched three shorthanded goals!! Then, to add insult to injury, Mitchell, released from the sinbin just seconds earlier, scored one himself to put the 'Birds up 4-2. The period ended with the Thunderbirds holding a 5-4 lead. Play was fairly even, both Jeff Powless in the Onondaga net and Craig Delormier at the other end played well. The Thunderbirds took both minors assessed.

The fact that Onondaga had only eleven runners started to show in the second frame. The T-Birds outscored the Warriors 7-3 to make the score 12-7 after two. With 1:48 left, both teams changed goalies, Kent Lyons for Onondaga, and Daseh Nanticokefor the 'Birds. The T-Birds took the only minor.

The third belonged to the T-birds as they scored six unanswered goals to make the final tally 18-7. Again, the T-birds took the only minor (all four in the game).

The eager and talented lads from Akwesasne simply wore down their gutsy counterparts to come away with a well deserved win. Notable among the missing from Onondaga was the entire Bucktooth contigent.

Nations Cup 1999 Game Four Report And Summaries

Six Nations Braves 10, Ganienkeh Gunners 7 September 17, 1999

OHSWEKEN -- The "thrown together quickly" Six Nations Braves played a steady game and defeated the Ganienkeh Gunners 10-7 in Nations Cup action this afternoon. The Braves are a team thrown together at the last minute to replace the late cancelling Akwesasne Outlaws. Several of the Braves are familiar players to me, Red Rebel Jr B player, a few Jr A's, and a few unknown to me. Kevin Miller and Mike Montour did a fine job putting this squad together on extremely short notice.

Both teams started tentatively, Six Nations scoring twice in this frame, while Ganienkeh's only goal was on the power play. The Braves took five of nine minors. Penalty killing was good on both sides, and Gunners' Bryan Jacobs and Braves' Jake Henhawk played excellently in their nets.

Ganienkeh tied it at 2 just eleven seconds into the second stanza, then saw the Braves work up a 6-2 lead by period's end, the sixth goal coming on the power play. The Gunners took seven of thirteen minors, each team got one major.

The Gunners chipped steadily at the Braves' lead, winning the third 5-4 (one Gunners goal was a shorthander), but ran out of time, Six Nations winning 10-7. Kevin Hill played briefly in the Nations net. Ganienkeh took four of seven minors.
Ganienkeh player of the game: Sose Kirby
Six Nations player of the game: Jake Henhawk
Referees Mel VanEvery and Gary Martin did a fine job.

Nations Cup Game Five Report and Summaries

Ohsweken Warriors 17, Onondaga Warriors 14 September 17, 1999

OHSWEKEN -- The Ohsweken Warriors outlasted the still short benched Onondaga Warriors 17-14 this afternoon in the best game so far in the round robin tourney. Onondaga looked much better than they did in their earlier game, keeping pace with Ohsweken until the last couple of minutes. There were only five minors called, three to Ohsweken, resulting in three powerplay goals for Onondaga and one for Ohsweken.

The teams traded goals until it was knotted at 3 with 5:49 left, then Ohsweken potted four straight to lead 7-3 going for the first break. It was looking like a repeat of Onondaga's morning game, but.....

In the second frame, Onondaga outscored Ohsweken 6-3 to tie the score at 9 with 20 minutes to go!! Onondaga had found something to get their adrenaline pumping and played hard and well!!

The teams traded goals steadily throughout the third, including all the power play goals, the score tied at 14, both teams trying big time to "pull out the win", but, that short bench of Onondaga's took it's toll, Ohsweken scoring three times in the final 5:05 to secure the 17-14 victory. Full marks to Onondaga, they never quit, just kept coming at Ohsweken with everything they had.
Onondaga Player of the game: Ed Shenandoah
Ohsweken player of the game: Chuck Doxtator (I'll add an honourable mention for Dus Nanticoke)
Referees Chet Couture and Terry Morneau called an excellent game.

Onondaga scorers: Kent Lyons 0,1 Kevin Powless 2,0 Ron Coogan 1,3 Ryan Lewis 0,1 Ed Shenandoah 3,3 Jarred Terrance 0,3 Peter Benedict 4,1 Murray Stout 1,4 Dustin Hill 0,2 Rod Redeye 1,0 Brad Jones 2,1

I apologize if I have some of the names wrong, the game sheet is difficult to read.

Frog Pond Maulers (Ohsweken) 19, Ganienkeh Gunners 6 September 17, 1999

OHSWEKEN -- The Frog Pond Maulers counted their second big win of the series with a 19-6 victory over the fiesty Ganienkeh Gunners tonight. The Frogmen scored four power play goals and a shorthander, while the Gunners notched three on the power play.

The Maulers pulled away from the Gunners steadily with period scores of 6-2, 7-3, and 5-1. The outcome was never in doubt, but credit to Ganienkeh, they tried hard all game, but came up against a monster, Ken "Monster" Montour that is, who showed why he was voted OLA Jr A MVP. Montour came up with many big saves includung several breakaways, most notably in the late going of the first period when he stopped Gunners' Sose Kirby who had enough time for a dozen fakes, none of which fooled the wily Montour. With 13:24 left in the third, Gunners' goalie Bryan Jacobs hurt his left leg and was replaced by Tony Wyse. In the first, the Maulers took 4 of six minors, in the second they took seven of twelve, and in the third they took six of nine.
Ganienkeh player of the game: Sose Kirby
Frog Pond player of the game: Miles General
Referees Gary Martin and Mel VanEvery called a fine game.

Kim Squire note 1: Once more Kimbo walked away from trouble, taking no penalties.

Kim Squire note 2: After being basically tackled by a gaggle of Gunners, Kimbo came up with a couple of "funny" steps on that injured knee, I hope he hasn't done any harm to it.

Ganienkeh scorers: Bryan Jacobs 0,1 Tony Wyse 0,1 Roland Bruyere 1,0 Greg Diabo 0,1 Sose Kirby 1,3 Jamie Kirby 3,0 Chad Norton 1,0

Frog Pond scorers: Ken Montour 0,1 Tyler Bomberry 0,1 Ed Squire o,1 Ashley Hill 2,0 Chad Squire 2,2 Miles General 4,3 Kim Squire 2,2 Tim Bomberry 1,0 Jason Henhawk 1,0 Todd Squire 0,1 Cory Bomberry 0,3 Russ Davis 2,1 Dal Squire 4,1 Clay Squire 1,1 Nic Davis 0,3 Robert Henhawk 1,1 Bob Henry 1,3 Delby Powless 0,1

This was the first gamesheet that I didn't have to squint hard at, use a magnifying glass or sorcery in order to decipher the roster. Would the two people who filled in these rosters be interested in filling in the rosters on ALL the gamesheets? *sigh* Dream on Ron!! lol

Nations Cup Game Eleven Report and Summaries

OHSWEKEN -- It took 7 goals in an exciting ten minute overtime period for the Ohsweken Warriors to grab the 15-14 win from the Mohawk Nations Thunderbirds this evening.

The T-birds ran up a 6-1 lead by the middle of the first and it looked like we were going to see another blowout, but Ohsweken's Roger Vyse's delayed penalty goal at 11:49 seemed to awaken the Warriors' spirit, as they put the orb home 3 more times to trail the T-birds 8-5 after the 1st. The T-birds took 4 of 7 minors.

The second frame was for the goalies and checkers, the T-birds outscoring the Warriors 3-2 to make the game score 11-7. Each team took 2 minors.

Nations Cup Game Fifteen (Bronze) Report and Summary

Mohawk Nation Thunderbirds 11, Six Nations Braves 8 September 19, 1999

OHSWEKEN -- The Mohawk Nations Thunderbirds won the bronze medal and the $1,500.00 team prize that goes with it by defeating the Six Nations Braves 11-8 tonight in the final day of Nations Cup competition. The Braves earned $750.00 for their 4th place finish.

The 1st period featured superb goaltending by the Braves Jake Henhawk and T-Birds Craig Delormiere. It took 6:48 for Six Nations to open the scoring. The T-birds tied it 3 minutes later, and went ahead a minute afterthat, both goals scored with the teams playing 4 per side. The Braves tied it at 2 with 6:08 left, but, just :19 seconds later, the T-birds reclaimed the lead to end the frame with the score 3-2. Each team took 1 minor.

The Thunderbirds came out of the gate quickly, scring twice in the opening 1:04 of the 2nd period, causing Kevin Hill to come in to replace Henhawk in the Braves net, although I don't believe he could be found at fault in any of the goals. Five minutes later, the Braves got 2 back to close the gap to 5-4, the second goal was on the power play. Shortly after this, in a 1:49 span, the T-birds put 3 past Hill, who was also not to be faulted. The remaining 8:12 was scoreless, despite many great tries by both teams. The T-birds headed for the break leading 8-4. Each team took 3 minors.

Henhawk returned to the Braves net for the final frame, and once again, he played superbly. Meanwhile, his teammates potted a quick pair to come within 2 of the T-birds, and it stayed like that for 7 1/2 minutes, despite the best efforts of all the shooters. The teams traded goals twice by the 3/4 point and the T-birds iced the cake with the last goal of the game with 3:39 left. Despite the frantic efforts of the Braves, they couldn't get any more by Delormiere, and the Thunderbirds earned the bronze medal in the 1999 Nations Cup. Six Nations took 5 of 8 minors. Each team got a fighting major and a game misconduct when T-bird Dave Sunday KO'd Braves' Mike VanEvery.

The gutsy Braves, who very nearly upset the favoured Frog Pond Maulers last night, hung tough, but were outdistanced by the better practiced T-birds.

Thunderbirds player of the game: Lance Mitchell
Referees Tim Vinson and Gary Martin called an excellent game.

FROG POND MAULERS WIN 1999 NATIONS CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!

OHSWEKEN -- The Frog Pond Maulers took home the Gold last night by narrowly defeating the Ohsweken Warriors 7-6 in overtime in front of about 1,000 raucus fans! In a unique situation, both teams were "home" Teams and most fans were cheering for both teams!!! This was one of the best lacrosse games I have ever seen, superb goaltending, fantastic shooting, great penalty killing, everyone put forward their absolute best effort!

A spectacular 15 minute pre-game laser light show delighted the crowd.

First Period: Dwayne Porter opened the scoring for the Warriors with a shorthanded effort set up by Chuck Doxtator and Derek General. Scott Harris Made it 2-0 for the Warriors at 6:52. With Ashley Hill in the sin-bin, Kim Squire put on a penalty killing clinic, twisting, turning, and bursts of speed to keep his pursuers at bay. Roger Vyse made it 3-0 from a Yul Baker pass. Ohsweken's Ed Vyse appeared to hurt his right leg and had to be helped from the floor with 1:15 left. This was a night for clinics, both goaltenders put theirs on all through the game, Neil Bomberry at the Frog Pond end and Derek General in the Warriors net. Period score, 3-0 for the Warriors. Each team took 3 minors.

Second period: Todd Squire finally put the Frogmen on the board at 16:39. Action was again fast and furious, but goaltending clinic #102 was "in progress", scoring was kept to a minimum, excitement kept at the maximum. Penalty killing clinic #102 was conducted by Kimbo with Nick Davis in the box. Cory Bomberry closed the gap for the Maulers with :48 on the clock, sending the teams to the break with the Warriors hanging on to a 3-2 lead.

Third period: There were more goals scored this period than in the rest of the game, 7 in all, starting with Frog Pond potting 2 a minute apart by Robert Henhawk and Kim Squire to give the Maulers their 1st lead of the game. Chad Squire upped the lead to 5-3 with a shorthander at 12:06. Don Mathias closed the gap to 1 for the Warriors at 13:10 while on the power play. Just 17 seconds later, Scott Harris tied the score, fed by Todd VanEvery and Harris. We were kept on the edge of our seats for the rest of the game, spectacular saves on equally spectacular shooting, the intensity was at it's peak. New dad Landon Miller gave the Warriors the lead with a mere :52 on the clock, but wait! This is lacrosse, it ain't over yet! With the Warriors trying hard for an insurance marker, the Maulers Cory Bomberry gets possession deep in his own zone, passes to Kim Squire who is all alone just past center, Kim turns towards the Waiting Neil Bomberry, streaks in, fakes once, and scores!! with :31 left to tie the score at 6, but wait now, it still ain't over!! The Frog Pond gets possession off the draw and calls a time out. Action resumes with Frog Pond pressing hard, sending a flurry of balls at General, the last one coming hard from the off side, Derek General "magically" got there to make the save of the game with :01 left on the clock, sending us into overtime with the score knotted at 6. Frog Pond took 2 of 3 minors.

Overtime period: Play was even for the first half, then the Warriors forced Neil Bomberry to put on clinic #103 as they bombarded him with a barage of at least a dozen shots within a minute. Both of these awesome goaltenders were put through severe testing, passing with flying colours! With 2:25 0n the clock, Frog Pond's Clay Squire scored on passes from Cory Bomberry and Miles General. The Warriors tried valiantly to tie the score, but Bomberry finished his clinic by keeping the eager Warriors off the board. With :29 left, Frog Pond got possession, and that was it, the game ended with the favoured Frog Pond Maulers wining the gold! No penalties were called.
Referees Terry Morneau and Chet Couture called a great game.
