Stars Make It A Series

Six Nations 10, Owen Sound 9

By Bill Walker: Owen Sound Sun Times

Friday August 9, 2002

OHSWEKEN -- Maybe it’s time to put those flights to Edmonton on hold for a couple days because the Six Nations Stars are making noise about heading west themselves.

The Stars were able to overcome a third-straight defensive collapse and pull off an overtime comeback of their own to down the Owen Sound Montana’s Woodsmen 10-9 Friday in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior League final.

Their backs were to the wall and they were clawing harder than ever, said Owen Sound coach Butch McNabb.

Our offensive game was just off a touch. We had our chances at the end and we just couldn’t get the finisher.

The win narrows the Woodies’ lead to 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Game 4 is set for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound. If necessary, Game 5 goes Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in Ohsweken.

At stake is a trip to the President’s Cup national championship tournament in Edmonton, which begins Aug. 21.

They had a good defensive game going and their goalie Kevin Beauvais stood on his head again, said McNabb, noting the Woodsmen are undefeated at home this season. We plan to stay that way.

Mark Cochrane, Tyler Francey and Chris King all scored twice while Rodney Tapp, Lindsay Plunkett and Andrew Reid added singles for theWoodies.

They were playing with their backs against the wall and we were playing like we already had it won, said King.

It’s hard to turn it on and turn it off like that. We just need a rest and come out and play from the start.

It’s hard fighting back after falling behind in the first period all of the time.

Delby Powless scored four goals and Chad Squire added a pair for Six Nations. Cal Smith, Miles General, Russ Davis and Jason Henhawk, with the winner, added singles for the Stars.

We’ve got a lot of confidence and we’re ready to go right now, said coach Ken Squire.

We’ve had the lead all the way through the whole series but we just kept losing our composure because of our young team. We talked about that and we never lost our composure (Friday).

Owen Sound goalie Steve Dietrich made 43 saves in the loss while Beauvais stopped 39 shots.

Stars Hammer Chiefs to Advance to OLA Sr B Final against Owen Sound

By Wray Maracle

BRANTFORD – Faced with their first true test of adversity, Six Nations Mohawk Stars hammered Burlington Chiefs 21-8 at a hot and muggy Brantford & District Civic Centre Sunday before 350 plus fans.

After losing to Owen Sound 8-7 in a thrilling overtime contest Thursday, the Mohawk Stars came out guns a blazing.

Burlington lost 9-3 to Owen Sound Saturday and was forced into the sudden-death playoff game with Six Nations.

Mohawk Stars Head Coach, Ken Squire said, "That was the Stars lacrosse that we know. We played lazy lacrosse against Owen Sound. It was do-or-die for both teams. The team played better defense tonight and when they got through, Ken "Root" (Sandy) was there to stop them. He is a major caliber goalie and he had a hellavah game for us."

Six Nations and Burlington exchanged a pair of goals each early in the contest only to have the Mohawk Stars explode for seven unanswered markers by the end of the first 20 minutes of action.

Chad Squire fired his 2nd of the game and eventual game winner with 1:55 remaining in the first segment.

Chad "Spook" Squire said, "Not bad for a defensemen. I tried my best. We were confident, but not too confident coming into night’s game. We’re missing a few key players, with Jason (Henhawk) serving his suspension. Ryan Davis and Chad Hill on the defensive end of the floor."

Six Nations outshot Burlington 21-12 in the first.

The middle frame was more of the same for Six Nations as they seemed to score at will on both Chiefs’ goalies, Pat Campbell and Trevor Brennan with the Mohawk Stars hold a 17-6 lead after 40 minutes.

The Stars held a 23-17 edge in shots in the second period.

With the score a little out of range for Burlington, tempers were flaring a bit early in the third as Delby Powless and Mike Shaw duked it out in front of both team benches.

Greg Lovell never one to back down from a challenge got into a scrap with James Harding while Referees Watson and Richardson were separating Powless and Shaw.

Both Lovell and Harding received game-misconduct’s for their dance.

Six Nations received 47 minutes in penalties while the Chiefs earned 43.

Both teams scored three times with the extra-man and the Mohawk Stars added a pair of shorthanded markers.

Six Nations continued its dominance for the remainder of the contest by outshooting Burlington 19-14 in the third and 63-43 overall.

Kimbo Squire said, "We had to win. The team was pretty disappointed following the loss to Owen Sound the other night. We played a lot better tonight."

Six Nations Mohawk Stars balanced attack was something that they’ll need in the OLA Sr B final which starts this Friday at the Civic Centre.

Delby Powless led the Stars with seven (3G, 4A) points, Clay Squire-Hill also scored three times. Stars Captain Don Whitlow, Nick Skye, Scott Ronson and Chad Squire netted a pair. Single markers were by Miles General, Cal Smith, Shawn Garlow, Kimbo Squire, Trent Hill, Stu Johnson and Ashley Hill.

Russ Davis led the assist parade with five helpers, Kimbo Squire and Stars goalie; Ken Sandy had three assists each. Clay Squire-Hill, Stu Johnson and Ashley Hill with two assist each.

Singles were by Don Whitlow, Trent Hill, Cal Smith, Chad Squire, Greg Lovell, Miles General, Shawn Garlow and Roger Martin.

Keith Welner scored twice for the Chiefs. Singles were by Chris Langdale, Shawn Cardy, Kevin Smith, Ryan Flippance, Andrew Harholt and Mike Shaw.

Brett Ritchie added four assists. Langdale had a pair of helpers and single Chief assists were by Welner, Smith, Flippance, Harholt, Jody Holbrough and goalie, Pat Campbell and Trevor Brennan.

Mohawk Stars will host the Opening game of the OLA Sr B Final for the Clave Levack Memorial Trophy starting on Friday at the Civic Centre @ 8:30 PM

Game two is in Owen Sound Sunday night @ 7:00 PM

Aces Take Third Place From Brooklin!!

By Ron Pallister
June 21, 2002

ARTHUR - The Arthur Aces took sole possession of third place with an 11 - 8 victory over the Brookln Merchants in front of an avid crowd of about 225.

The game started on a downer as the Merchants were late arriving, despite leaving at 4:30pm. This had them starting shorthanded with a delay of game penalty which resulted in the Aces 1st power play goal just :31 after the draw, Chris Redwood doing the honours. Jonas Derks knotted the score 15 seconds later, and Jared Bilich gave the visitors the lead 5 minutes after that, followed by Brian Shelfoon's 1st goal of the season to give Brooklin a 3-1 lead. Then John "Special K" Keating stepped up to bat, scooping up a loose ball in the Arthur end along the boards, outdistancing his pursuers and putting a crisp shot over Jim Rankin's left shoulder. "k's" goal seemed to spark the Aces, Cory Savery finding the range a minute later to tie the score at 3, and Chris Redwood notching his 2nd with Arthur holding a 2 man advantage, sending his squad to the break leading 4-3. Brooklin took 6 minors and a major, Arthur took 4 minors and a major.

With barely a minute gone in the 2nd, with Arthur on the powerplay, Brooklin's Mike Fryer intercepted a Brian Rooney pass in the left circle of his own zone, blasted out of the zone into a 1 on 1. Shoulder to shoulder near the crease, Fryer bulldozed his way to the right and popped a pinpoint, over the shoulder shot into the top corner, knotting the contest at 4. Adam Lorenz made short work of restoring the Aces lead and Jeff Spies chose an opportune time to get his first Senior League goal to put the hometeam up by 2. The fiesty Merchants wouldn't stand for that, Mark Ainsworth, followed by Phil Greenen's 1st goal of the season tied us up at 6. Brian Rooney atoned himself by putting the Aces up by 1 with 8:46 remaing in the frame. And. The goaltenders shut the gates. Brooklin's Jim Rankin and Arthur's Matt "Shifty" Shafer turned everything away to end the 2nd 7-6 in Arthur's favour. Brooklin took 2 minors, the Aces 3.

Aces' Kyle Beirnes and Merchantman Derek Jones traded goals in the 1st 3 minutes. An uncharacteristic error by Brooklin netminder Jim Rankin almost proved costly, from the middle of the right circle, he attempted a long fastbreak pass that was intercepted by Arthur's Pat Martin near center and fired back accurately towards the middle of the net, but Rankin got back and snagged the ball with his stick extended to his limit. Chris Landoni started a 3 goal spree for the Aces. Adam Lorenz got a shorthander with 3 neat fakes and an underhand shot into the lower left corner. Despite having 2 defenders all over him, Landoni managed to get a shot thru their legs that that found it's way to the twine. 11-7 Arthur. Dave Power came in to releive Jim Rankin in the Brooklin net. Jonas Derks made it 11-8 with 6:06 remaining, but the Aces defense and goaltending kept them from getting any closer. Good ball control and excellant use of the shot clock helped the Aces keep the Merchants' shots to a mimimum, while getting in some good tries of their own. Powers kept his pipes safe for the remainder as well, leaving the final score 11-8 for Arthur. The Aces took the lone minor.

A fun game to watch, with the Aces playing much more disciplined than when I saw them earlier in the season. Brooklin seemed disorganized at times, and, of course, arriving late after a long drive wouldn't have helped any.

Referees Jon Watson and Tom Hutchison called a good game, maintaining good control while allowing the game to flow.

Mohawk Stars ride Delby Powless 5-goal performance to victory over Chiefs

By Wray Maracle

Special to Turtle Island News

BURLINGTON – Six Nations Mohawk Stars’ snipper, Delby Powless capped off a 5-goal performance with 39.5 seconds remaining in regulation time to help his team a 12-11 come-from-behind victory of the Burlington Chiefs Sunday night at the Central Arena before 150 spectators.

Powless scored four of his five goals in the last 5:44 of the game with the Chiefs holding a 10-7 lead.

The Chiefs appeared to be on the verge of a major upset, until Powless took over by scoring goals at 14:22, 17:28 and 18:14 to tie the game at 10-10.

Jason Henhawk, who gave Six Nations their first lead of the game 26 seconds into third period at 7-6, looked to have scored the game-winner (his fourth of the game) only six seconds (18:20) after Powless’s tying goal.

But, the Stars got caught up on fast break by the Chiefs and allowed Burlington to tie the score with 1:08 to go.

But, Stars Head Coach, Ken Squire said, "We can’t expect to keep coming back like that every night, it’ll catch up to us some where along the line. Campbell played a hellavah game for them. I told the guys to take something off of their shots and start picking’ the corners."

Powless performance overshadowed an outstanding goaltending performance by Pat Campbell in the Burlington net.

Burlington Chiefs Head Coach, Armando Rodrigues said, "Patty (Campbell) played awesome. He stood on his head all night long. But, we lost that game in the second period. Any time you have a 5 goal lead on a team in this league, you should be able to finish them off."

The Chiefs and Campbell shutout the Stars 4-0 after the first period and were up 5-0 midway through the second, only to have the Stars comeback and to tie the score at 6-6 on Delby Powless’s first goal of the game with 3:31 remaining in the middle frame.

Henhawk was the first Six Nations shooter to break Campbell’s bubble with a breakaway marker at 11:36 of the second.

Six Nations jumped out to the early lead in the third, but Burlington fired the next four goals in to set the stage for the Six Nations comeback.

Nick Skye, Clay Squire-Hill and Kimbo Squire netted the other Mohawk Stars goals.

Kimbo Squire and Jason Henhawk led the Stars in the assist parade with three each. Clay Squire-Hill, Stu Johnson, Shawn Garlow and goalie, Ken Sandy all added two each. Singles were by Fred Doolittle, Russ Davis and Dwayne Porter.

Andrew Harholt, Chris Langdale and Sean Cardy each scored a pair of goals each for Burlington in the loss.

"Jason (Henhawk) and Kenny (Sandy) had hellavah games for us." Coach Squire added, "Delby is a top line player in any league, whether it be Major, College or Senior B, he’ll always be that sniper that every team needs."

With the Chiefs leading 10-7 and killing a penalty, Stars goalie Ken Sandy got caught out of net retrieving a loose ball only to have a Burlington defender grab the ball before he reached it.

Sandy made desperation lunge and made to get his stick in the way of the open net shot, that save turn out to be a bigger play than it initially appeared to be.

"It was a desperation move." Ken Sandy said of the play, "I guess I lucked out a bit. This team has the "Never Quit attitude" and we battled back to win this one. Delby stepped up when we needed him too. When Delby makes up his mind, he is so hard to stop and Jason (Henhawk) was great at the draws all night long."

Six Nations’ man-on-man defense wasn’t quite as effective with Campbell moving the ball for the Chiefs.

"He give us another dimension to this team." Rodrigues said "Patty has played at the pro level and he doesn’t get rattled mentally. I do think he was disappointed with his defense late in the game as the Stars got a number of open opportunities late in the game."

The win keeps Six Nations tied for 1st place in the OLA Sr. B circuit with the Woodsmen, who defeated the Ennismore Shamrocks 9-6 in Owen Sound Sunday night. Both Six Nations and Owen Sound now have identical 10-1 records with three games remaining each. Two of them are against each other.

Mohawk Stars extend winning streak to four games

Saturday, June 8, 2002
By Wray Maracle

BRANTFORD - Six Nations Mohawks Stars showed off some quality addition to their lineup Saturday night to the hometown faithful as former Six Nations Chiefs, Delby Powless and Miles General made debut’s in a Stars uniform.

The additions paid immediate dividends as the Powless and General combined for 11 points in to help the Stars battle back to win 16-9 over the visiting Burlington Chiefs at the Brantford & District Civic Centre.

Burlington jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first period despite being outshot 22-11.

The Chiefs were up 8-5 at 12:51 of the middle frame when Six Nations Head Coach, Ken Squire decided to pull starter, Kevin Beauvais and insert, Ken Sandy between to the pipes.

Coach Squire said, "Ken (Sandy) played a hellavah game for us in the second half. Allowing only one goal. But, I thought with our style of checking them right up the floor tired them out. They’re throwing the ball away; they didn’t care where the passes went. We wore them down, but I didn’t think they would last as long as they did."

The move seem to be the right one for Six Nations as Kimbo "Kid Rock" Squire netted a pair of goals prior to the end of the second (one powerplay marker) and make it an 8-7 game with 20 minutes remaining.

Six Nations outshot Burlington 25-18 in the 2nd period.

The story in the third was Delby Powless as he tied the game with a shorthanded effort 1:31 into the final period. Powless then added the go-ahead goal (3:08 PPG) and the eventual game winning goal at 6:10 for a 10-8 lead. Nick Skye scored his first of two on the night at 10:20 before the Chiefs’ Andrew Harholt scored his 4th of the game on the powerplay to make it 11-9.

That would be as close as the Chiefs would get the rest of the game as the Stars added five more to finish the game off. Stars outshot the Chiefs 19-16 in the third and 66-45 overall.

"We weren’t prepared tonight." Squire added, "I knew that as soon as I walked into the arena, we weren’t prepared. We were taking these guys too lightly. A lot of teams come in here and look at our lineup and they go all out to beat us. A lot of them play over their heads to beat us. So, my guys have to be prepared every game."

Delby Powless led all scorers with an eight (5G, 3A) point night. Kim Squire (4G, 1A) and Russ Davis (1G, 4A) added five each. Jason Henhawk (2G, 1A) and Roger Martin (1G, 2A) with three, Nick Skye (2G), Scott Ronson (1G, 1A) and Clay Squire (2A) with two points each. Single assist contributors were Ashley Hill and Don Whitlow.

STARS TAKE CIVIC CENTRE BY STORM

As Read in The Brantford Expostor

By BRIAN SMILEY, Expositor Staff

BRANTFORD _ The Six Nations Stars were out of this world at the beginning of their first game of the Ontario Lacrosse Association's senior B season at the civic centre Sunday. However, the Stars quickly came back to earth, holding on for a 14-12 win over the visiting St. Clair Storm in front of more than 500 fans.

The game featured a lengthy opening ceremony and Six Nations coach Ken Squire said that had an effect on his team.

``We played a lacklustre game,'' said the coach. ``We were standing around waiting for the opening ceremonies (to end) and that didn't help.

``We didn't play like we can.''

Six Nations looked good at the start of the game, opening up a 4-0 lead before St. Clair got on the board. By the end of the first period it was 5-1 and the Stars looked to be in control. It also helped that Six Nations goalie Ken Sandy was outstanding.

``We actually let them back in the game,'' said Squire of his team's lapse in the second stanza. ``We got lazy and that can't happen.''

After St. Clair scored to open the period, Six Nations responded with a marker of their own. It was then that the Storm crept back into the game.

St. Clair scored three unanswered goals to trail by one, 6-5. That woke the Stars up, as they scored the next three goals to get a comfortable lead again. At the end of the second period, Six Nations held a 10-7 lead.

After Six Nations opened the scoring in the final frame, the Storm looked as though they were repeating their second period comeback, getting to within two at 11-9. But Six Nations put the game away with the next two goals and then hung on as the visitors put up three late goals.

Squire, whose team heads on the road for the next four games, the first of which is Saturday in Arthur at 7:30 p.m., said his team has some work to do.

``I think we were just lazy and we probably have to work on loose balls and stuff like that,'' he said. ``We weren't doing very well on our draws either.''

Nick Skye and Kim Squire led the Stars, whose next home game is May 26 at the civic centre at 6 p.m., with three goals and an assist each. Stuart Johnson got a pair of goals while Frank Smith, Shawn Garlow, Don Whitlow, Greg Lovell, Scott Ronson and Jason Henhawk got one goal each.

Lovell, Sandy and Henhawk recorded two assists each and Clay Squire, Cecil Hill, Dwayne Porter, Roger Martin and Whitlow got one each.

IN THE CREASE . . . One of the pre-game ceremonies included recognizing the first 10 members of the Six Nations Lacrosse Hall of Fame. They included Judy ``Punch'' Garlow, Roger ``Buck'' Smith, Richard ``Boss'' Squire, Bill Squire, Gaylord Powless, Ross Powless, Raymond ``Wheels'' Hill, Jake Bomberry, Ron ``Hum'' Thomas and Wilfred ``Willy'' Logan.
